I'm sick of sawdust.

Someone or other (I blame John) came up with this crazy idea of sanding down all the wood work on the upper stairs (the house is a bilevel), instead of recarpeting it, and varnishing it to match the wood paneling in our basement and to go with the laminate flooring. We will hopefully finish today. It's going to look amazing, but I have to say that I am heartily sick of sawdust.

  1. You mean the previous owners had wood floors upstairs but not down? Weird. Well, from your description, it sounds like it's a good idea and it will look classy.

  2. Actually, they had carpet upstairs. We pulled the carpet from the lv room and hallway and replaced it with laminate. The carpet on the upper stairs was in bad shape, so we pulled it off and found out that the steps weren't plywood or particle board or something they're actually oak for the runners (the pieces of wood on the sides that the steps slide into) and the steps themselves are pine. That's what we ended up sanding down and putting a natural finish on. The natural pine now matches the wainscoting on the walls downstairs. John decided to put laminate down in the entryway in front of the front door, and is finishing it up right now. It's a bilevel, so if you come in the front door you can see upstairs and downstairs. If you go upstairs everything except the bedrooms and bathroom (including the staircase) is wood or laminate. If you go downstairs everything (except the bathroom), including the stairs, is carpeted. The only wood downstairs is the paneling on the walls.
